Below are some of the symbols they brought to our attention:
- gardens- bouquet of theological concepts
- roses-Mary
- clover-the Trinity
- aspen- the cross
- chestnuts- chastity
- apples- the fall, evil
- cyclamen- Mary's bleeding heart/sorrowing
- fern- humility
- hyacinth- longing for heaven
- oak- strong faith and virtue
- lion- Christ
- whale- the devil (who would drag souls down to hell)
- stag- Christ, who tramples the devil
- swallow- (swallows feed in the air) theological lesson: we should have our minds set on heavenly things.
- salamander- a righteous person that (like a salamander) can withstand the fire. (also a reminder of the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego)
May we have eyes to see and ears to hear.
