Advent Day 3 – Room for the Child
This is the irrational seasonWhen love blooms bright and wild.
Had Mary been filled with reason
There’d have been no room for the child.
- Madeleine L’Engle (from the poem “After Annunciation“)
ADVENT ACTION
Read Luke 1:39-56
Create room for the Child by simply turning off the overly-rational talk radio program this morning, or the clever advertisements of the day or the nightly 10 o’clock news, in order to be wowed by the story of the angel visiting an “unfounded” Mary. Her response to the angel’s foretelling of a nonsensical virgin birth, “Yes, I see it all now: I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve. Let it be with me just as you say.”
In what particular ways am I filled with the reason of the culture rather than leaving room for the Child? To what specific societal rationalities do I need to say, “NO!” that is actually a “YES!” to the Way of the Child?
